Brúnkál

Browned white cabbage

Ingredients for 4 persons

1 head of white cabbage
80 g margarine
1 tsp coarse salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
130 g brown sugar
2 bay leaves

Preparation

Wash the head of cabbage, remove the stalk and cut the cabbage very finely.

Melt the margarine in a large pan and fry the sliced cabbage in the pan, stirring regularly to prevent burning.

Then season the fried cabbage with the salt, cinnamon, ground cloves and nutmeg.

Put the cabbage mixture in an ovenproof dish, insert the two bay leaves and sprinkle everything with the sugar.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 °F (180 °C) upper and lower heat for about 3/4 hour.

The Brúnkál is traditionally served at Christmas as a side dish to meat dishes, but also tastes very good with vegetarian nut balls or without any other side dish as a main dish with potatoes. Brúnkál is very filling.

The smell alone, which is strongly reminiscent of the aroma of incense sticks, is pure Christmas!!!
