Ísbíltúr

An “Ice Cream Road Trip” in Icelandic

Do you know the Icelandic word “ísbíltúr”? Literally translated, it means “ice cream car tour”, a “journey to eat ice cream”, an “ice cream road trip”, so to speak.

Most Icelanders love ice cream and soft ice cream with lots of toppings and eat ice cream enthusiastically, regardless of the outside temperature, in winter and summer, in snow, rain and sunshine.

And when you drive to your favorite ice cream shop ("ísbúð"), maybe the ice cream parlor just around the corner, maybe the ice cream parlor a little further away because it has particularly delicious ice cream or three types of licorice ice cream, . ..

Valdís ice cream counter at Reykjavík harbor -
with 3 different types of licorice ice cream

...maybe also to the farm that sells its home-made ice cream...

Rjómabúið Erpsstaðir - “The cream shop” on the Erpsstaðir farm

...licking your ice cream on site or in the car while you're leisurely driving around the area - then that's called an "ísbíltúr".

With this in mind, I wish you all a good appetite - verði þér að góðu!

And if you can't eat ice cream in Iceland right now, I've at least brought you a few Icelandic ice cream recipes:

Jarðarberjaís / strawberry ice cream
Lakkrísís með sósu / licorice ice cream with sauce
Súkkulaðiís / chocolate ice cream
Berjaskyrís / berry skyr ice cream
