Wool shopping at Álafoss

On the way to your own Icelandic sweater

During our New Year's stay in Iceland, I was already looking for a "Lopi," a "Lopapeysa"—one of those typically beautiful sweaters made of Icelandic wool.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a zip-up hoodie in my desired colors (black and red). So I thought I'd give it a try myself and slowly work towards my dream Lopi.

My first attempt turned out to be a bit too big (very!), but the second one - for my husband - fits much better.

I'm currently on my third attempt – and am slowly getting closer to what I envisioned. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention when buying the yarn before our trip to Iceland and ended up with balls of yarn in two different shades of red.

So one day I took the opportunity to drive to Mosfellsbær with my children to get more supplies in the right colors from Álafoss (the manufacturer of my wool).

Álafoss is a waterfall in the Varmá River in Mosfellsbær near Reykjavík. The waterfall's energy has powered the wool factory of the same name since 1896. Today, the former factory building houses the wool shop. Behind the shop, which sells wool, knitwear, and a few typical Icelandic items, is the waterfall, which is now a protected nature reserve.

ÁLAFOSS FÖT BEZT - Álafoss clothing is best

So my evening activity is secured again!
Ég er að prjóna - I'm knitting.
