My Icelandic sweater model “Kjötsúpa”

The idea for this sweater came to me in the summer - I thought it would be fun to combine my two "great loves" (Icelandic cuisine and Icelandic knitting) into one project and, in a sense, "knit a recipe."

Model Kjötsúpa - Icelandic meat soup

The combination of my two hobbies gave rise to the idea for this Icelandic sweater, "Model Kjötsúpa" – I chose carrots, fat woolly sheep, and cooking pots over the fire as motifs.

We tinkered around a bit together. The basic pattern was decided on relatively quickly, but my husband helped with the carrot green and also with adjusting the sheep to the increases in the knitting pattern. Overall, I'm quite happy with the result—I think you can tell!

I bought the wool for this project this summer at Álafoss in Mosfellsbær. I quite like going there and like the selection of wool. Sure, it's factory-made, not hand-spun, hand-dyed wool from my own sheep, etc., and it's not exactly cheap either – but I simply like shopping there whenever I get the chance on a trip to Reykjavík.

I'm slowly getting a bit of practice and getting a bit faster at knitting - it took me about three weeks to turn the idea and the wool into the finished Icelandic sweater.

You can of course also find a recipe for kjötsúpa, Icelandic meat soup, here on the blog. It is actually one of the oldest recipes here and is simply typically Icelandic, and is one of the dishes that I always enjoy cooking!

I hope it works out and I can wear my hand-knitted Lopapeysa on Fyrsti vetrardagur (= the First Day of Winter on October 28, 2023) at the Meat Soup Day on Skólavörðustígur!
