Morgungrautur Gabríels

Gabriel's morning cereal

We got the recipe for this morning groats from Eygló Björk Ólafsdóttir from "Móðir Jörð" when we asked her about her most popular barley recipe - she said it was her "perennial favorite" and that she also had it every morning Breakfast. Well, if that's not a recommendation!

We translated the recipe from Icelandic - you can find the original here .

Ingredients

500 ml rolled barley
2 liters of water
2 apples (chopped)
possibly. 2 pears (chopped)
100 - 200 g raisins
1 Tbsp cinnamon
2 tsp salt
2 tsp honey
100 g dried dates for sweetening

to taste:

100 - 200 g sunflower and/or pumpkin seeds

Preparation

Put all the ingredients in a large pot the night before...

...and let it cook for about 15 minutes. Then turn off the heat and go to bed.

Warm up the groats again in the morning, but you can also eat them cold or with milk or sour milk.

The cooked groats will keep in the refrigerator for several days.
