The charity pizza at Domino's
Since 2013, the Domino's pizza chain in Iceland has had a special fundraising campaign once a year. Every year an Icelandic star chef creates a very special pizza topping for this charity pizza.
According to Domino's, in the campaign, all proceeds from the sale of the charity pizza (i.e. the proceeds, not just the profits) go to a nonprofit organization.
The 2025 charity pizza is topped with salami, mortadella, burrata cheese and, as a special extra, pistachios.
The promotional period this year is from April 7th to 10th, 2025 (Monday to Thursday).
Due to the high demand, the ingredients for the special topping of the Góðgerðarpizza were already used up on Tuesday evening and had to be purchased again, so some of the pizza was not available. On Wednesday evening the ingredients were finally used up and the Góðgerðarpizza was sold out. The campaign had to be ended early because it was such a resounding success. According to Domino's, this year's campaign raised a total of 12,033,777 ISK, the equivalent of just over 83,000 € or 93,000 $.
This year 2025, all proceeds from the sale of the charity pizza will go to the Minningarsjóður Bryndísar Klöru, i.e. to the memorial fund for Bryndís Klara.
The fund was dedicated to the memory of Bryndís Klara Birgisdóttir. She was a 17-year-old girl and was so seriously injured in a knife attack at Menningarnótt (= Culture Night) in Reykjavík in August 2024 that she died in hospital a few days later on August 30, 2024. The perpetrator was a 16-year-old Icelandic teenager, apparently the ex-boyfriend of one of Bryndís Klara's friends.
The aim and purpose of the fund is to support charitable projects that aim to improve the well-being and safety of children and young people in Icelandic society and thus strengthen a society in which solidarity and cohesion ("samkennd og samvinna" ) are paramount - so that other children and their families are spared such suffering.
The charity pizza will be available this year from April 7th to 10th, 2025.
Góðgerðarpizza since 2013
The charity pizza campaign has been around since 2013 and is taking place for the 12th time this year. So far, almost 65 million crowns have been donated (the equivalent of almost € 450,000 or $ 500,000), an average of around 5.8 million crowns (almost € 40,000 or $ 45,000) each time.
In recent years, donations from the annual campaign have gone to various non-profit organizations, an organization for stroke patients, a charity for children and adults with congenital heart defects and their families, an organization supporting children and young people with rare diseases, the emergency shelter for homeless women in Reykjavík, an organization for people with mental health problems as well as relatives and health and social workers, an association supporting primary school children in Iceland and an organization supporting children who have been victims of bullying.
The 2014 fundraising campaign was for the fund in memory of Loftur Gunnarsson, the association is committed to improving the living conditions of marginalized groups. Loftur Gunnarsson died on January 20, 2012 at the age of just 32 in the Landsspítali in Reykjavík, probably from a stomach ulcer that had not been treated for too long. Loftur had been homeless for years.
The largest contribution to date of almost 9.7 million crowns went to Píeta in 2020. The organization was founded in Iceland in 2016 and operates suicide prevention, is available as a contact person at any time, even in acute situations, and also takes care of relatives and friends who have lost a loved one to suicide. Support for people aged 18 and over who are at risk of suicide is free.
The charity pizza at Domino's has been designed every year since 2013 on a voluntary basis by Hrefna Rósa Sætran, an Icelandic star chef who runs several restaurants and is also known as a TV chef and cookbook author. Hrefna Sætran was born in 1980 and has turned her passion for cooking into a career since she was 19 years old.
Hrefna has a free hand when it comes to designing the annual Góðgerðarpizza for Domino's. The pizza usually contains ingredients that Domino's does not otherwise offer.
These are the previous pizza toppings for the charity pizzas that I spontaneously found online:
The April 2024 pizza was inspired by Greek cuisine, topped with salami, red onions, lettuce, grilled peppers and oregano. The Góðgerðarpizza 2023, for example, consisted of garlic sauce, salami, bacon, spinach, green apples, honey and truffles. The March 2022 pizza included classic salami, spicy salami, honey, red onion, mushrooms, thyme, oil and garlic sauce. In December 2020, the pizza consisted of salami, peppers, salad cheese, red onions, sun-dried tomatoes and basil pesto. During the October 2017 promotion, the pizza was topped with teriyaki chicken, yuzu jalapeno sauce, onions, spinach and mushrooms. For the pizza from October 2015, the topping consisted of minced meat, cheddar cheese, red onions, leeks, mushrooms and oregano, with a topping of chili béarnaise sauce.
Our conclusion on pizza 2025
Our pizza this year with salami, mortadella, burrata cheese and pistachios was definitely delicious - I would actually like to eat it again.
I think the idea of putting pistachios on the pizza is great, the taste is relatively neutral, but the consistency (small, firm pieces that are slightly floury when chewed) makes the structure of the pizza a special, good experience even when eating!
