Brúarfoss 2021

Brúarfoss Trail

The Brúará, the "bridge river", is a nearly 40 km long river in the Suðurland region in southern Iceland. The river takes its name from a stone arch that used to span the river here. The Brúará flows into the Hvíta between Skálholt and Sólheimar.

Shortly behind the Brúarfoss waterfall, the Brúará crosses the Laugarvatnsvegur (road no. 37) between Laugarvatn and the high-temperature area of Haukadalur

We were here once before in autumn 2016, when Brúarfoss was still an “insider tip” and you had to know where to turn from Laugarvatnsvegur, not quite legally park in a summer house area and then find your way to the waterfall through muddy terrain.

The summer house area here is now protected by barriers, there is an official parking lot on Laugarvatnsvegur and the Brúarfoss Trail is laid out and signposted here.

Here too, below Brúarfoss, the color of the water is fascinating...

Here at the beginning there is also a nice, wide, easy-to-walk path, here through this small birch forest, which is also easy to find using the yellow markings.

On the way you pass two more (smaller) waterfalls, the Miðfoss and here the Hlauptungufoss.

The snow on the stones in the waterfall gave the whole thing a special charm.

And we continued along the river...

With my beloved angelica!

So carry on!

I found the path along the river quite a challenge for me at times - the path is very narrow and you have to climb over stones at times. Well, we were lucky that it was cold enough that we didn't sink into the mud. On the other hand, it was pretty slippery for me in places and I definitely needed a helping hand!

In the end, with the help of my husband and children, I successfully mastered the path and made it to Brúarfoss!

In my opinion, Brúarfoss is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland - it is neither particularly big nor particularly powerful, but the color of the water is really unique!

This time we had Brúarfoss and the trail all to ourselves!

On the way back, however, we took the route through the settlement - after all, we wanted to get back to the road in daylight and scrambling over the frozen stones took time for me...

The way back was easier - and it was no comparison to the mud game we experienced here in 2016! We barely managed to reach the bridge because of all the mud...

Slide to the bridge in autumn 2016

The little trip to Brúarfoss was definitely worth it!

In any case, it was an experience!

Afterwards we went to Laugarvatn, ate something (in the restaurant, something very special for us in these Corona times!) and walked around the town a bit...
