Shoulder wrap with dachshunds
At the moment, I love knitting not full-length Icelandic sweaters (lopapeysur), but "just" a kind of shoulder warmer, a short poncho, so to speak, that warms you up when you're tired and a bit chilly in the evenings or on cooler days. Of course, I also knit it with a round yoke, like a classic Icelandic sweater.
Speaking of shivering: Last winter, a dear colleague of mine brought a blanket to the office to wrap herself in when it got chilly in the room. So I thought, in addition to the blanket underneath, maybe a shoulder warmer on top would be nice... and when I was recently at Hagkaup, the supermarket in Skeifan in Reykjavík, looking for wool for a new project, I decided to put the idea into action in time for next winter.
I was craving color, so I bought a batch of different colored Léttlopi yarn, various shades of blue and green for a gradient, and reddish-brown yarn for the motif. This is what we ended up with.
Pretty much everyone I proudly showed my latest work to looked slightly confused and then said: Those are, uh... horses...?
Okay, I admit, given my love for Iceland, you probably immediately think of Icelandic horses when I knit something, but these aren't supposed to be long, thin horses...
...but dachshunds. The colleague for whom I knitted the shoulder warmer is a passionate dachshund fan.
Well, I think if you know what you're looking for, you can definitely recognize the dachshunds! With floppy ears, a pointed snout, short legs, and a happily raised tail. I'm quite happy with the result!
Here's a before and after photo of the wool - first in the shop in Reykjavík, then during a first fitting as a shoulder warmer in the Icelandic countryside!
