Brúnkál

Browned cabbage

Ingredients for 4 persons

1 head of white cabbage
80 g margarine
1 tsp coarse salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
120 g brown sugar
2 bay leaves

Preparation

Wash the cabbage, remove the stalks and cut the cabbage into very fine shreds.

Melt margarine in a large skillet and gently fry the sliced cabbage in it. Keep stirring the whole time to prevent it from burning.

Season the fried cabbage with salt, cinnamon, cloves and ground nutmeg.

Fill the cabbage mixture into an ovenproof dish. Put in the two bay leaves and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake in preheated oven at 180 ° C for about 3/4 hour.

The Brunkal is traditionally served at Christmas as a side dish with meat, but it also tastes very good with vegetarian nut balls or as a main dish with potatoes. Brunkal is very filling.

Just the smell, reminiscent of the fragrance of incense sticks, is pure Christmas!!!
